IDD Therapy Disc Treatment

How we use IDD Therapy Disc Treatment at Spinex

  • When manual therapy alone is not enough to achieve change
  • To decompress and mobilise targeted spinal segments
  • In a programme of care which includes manual therapy
  • Primarily for bulging and herniated discs
  • To relieve nerve pain (sciatica) and address immobility in affected spinal areas
  • For patients who may be considering invasive treatments such as injections or surgery

Spinex Disc Clinic was set up with IDD Therapy at its heart to help people with disc problems.  Clinical Director Sally Lansdale had been affected by herniated discs and sciatica for many years.  Despite treatments from colleagues, like many other providers of IDD Therapy, it was only when she herself underwent IDD Therapy that she was able to be free of pain and get on with life.

This led her to focus on disc conditions and open a clinic whose primary focus is to provide the best in non-invasive disc treatment and help people as she herself was helped.

“IDD Therapy transformed my life.  At a time when I wasn’t sure if I would be able to continue working, I visited a colleague at the Buckingham Clinic in Glasgow where IDD Therapy was available.  After treatment, I could immediately tell that IDD Therapy had done something which no other treatment had.  Since then I have committed my professional life to helping patients who, like me, feel they have nowhere left to turn”.
Sally Lansdale, Clinic Director, Spinex Disc Clinic

Many of the patients coming to Spinex have been taking pain medication for some time and in many cases are considering invasive treatments such as injections or in extreme cases, surgery in their hope to be free of pain.

IDD Therapy provides a programme of treatment to decompress and mobilise targeted spinal segments in the lower back or neck.  It is a step change from traditional traction in the way it focusses treatment at the affected area and we use it to help improve function in the spine, which is key to spinal health.

Spinex was the first clinic anywhere in the world to combine IDD Therapy with ViMove, a highly advanced movement assessment and measurement system which enables us to better understand where your dysfunction lies and track progress.

We also use internationally-recognised research tools to measure outcomes and progress with our patients.

There are over 1,000 clinics providing IDD Therapy treatment internationally and a growing UK network including physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors.

Sally now serves as a UK trainer for IDD Therapy.  She and the Spinex team are all highly experienced in providing treatment and seeing patients with all manner of difficult conditions.

What is IDD Therapy Disc Treatment?

Intervertebral Differential Dynamics (IDD) Therapy is the successful and trusted non-surgical spinal decompression treatment for back pain, neck pain and related conditions such as sciatica.

Many back pain conditions are located at a particular level in the spine. With IDD Therapy we use computer-controlled pulling forces delivered by the SPINA medical devices to gently distract (draw apart) targeted segments of the spine in order to take pressure off specific discs and nerves whilst at the same time, gently stretching tight muscles and stiff ligaments.

Combined with manual therapy, we aim to relieve pain and create a platform for long term functional improvement.

Common Questions

I have had surgery, is IDD Therapy still suitable?
Provided there is no surgical hardware (metalwork etc) and surgery was over six months ago, IDD Therapy can be provided.

How many treatments do I need?
The rehabilitation programme is based around a 20 treatment protocol.  This is because it takes time to bring about change which so often has taken years to accumulate.  Most patients deemed appropriate for treatment will have an initial course of 10 sessions, followed by further a block of 10 sessions.  We track progress every step of the way.

Note – some spine conditions can respond very quickly to manual therapy and we use manual therapy as our primary treatment with many of our patients.  However for patients with unresponsive problems where IDD Therapy comes into consideration, it is for conditions which in our experience simply do no respond to a quick fix and which need something more than can be applied with the hands alone.

Is IDD Therapy painful?
No.  IDD Therapy is intended to be completely comfortable.  We do use considerable forces to decompress the spine but with IDD therapy, these are applied in a controlled manner.  We play gentle music during treatment and most people go to sleep.  We are very used to the sounds of snoring.

How long is each treatment?
A treatment last for one hour.  We begin by warming the muscles and ligaments for ten minutes with an advanced FAR infrared heat pad.  Treatment on the SPINA machines last for 25 minutes and afterwards we give some cold therapy.  The cold therapy serves to calm the treated area after treatment.

Do I need an MRI?
We do use MRI scans.  This helps us to confirm the level of the spine to be treated, understand the nature of the problem and rule out anything which might make IDD Therapy inappropriate.  Patients who have an MRI will usually bring it with them.  If you don’t have one, we can still see you.  If IDD Therapy is deemed appropriate then we can arrange a scan for you.  If you are a self-pay patients, the price of the MRI is £200 at weekends or £250 weekdays.  We use two centres in London and prices have come down significantly.

Will IDD Therapy work for me?
We do not have a 100% success rate.  However we have excellent outcomes for patients of all ages and backgrounds who need more for their pain.  We monitor and track progress every step of the way.  The more patients engage with the programme, the greater the success rates.

If we do not feel that IDD therapy is appropriate for you, we have relationships with leading London neurosurgeons, orthopaedic surgeons and pain consultants and can refer you for a second opinion.  That is rare because in most cases, if back pain has reached a point where surgery is a priority, patients will go directly to see a surgeon.  Your wellbeing is our absolute priority and our reputation is built on the level of care we provide and our integrity.

How much does treatment cost ?
Treatment last for one hour.  We have prices based on the number of treatments being paid for.  Patients often prefer to pay for blocks of treatment so that when they come they can focus on treatment.

Price per treatment
1: £85
10 treatments : £80 per session
20 treatments: £75 per session

What if I want to stop treatment?
No patient is under any obligation to continue treatment.  We monitor progress and give you feedback.  You can stop at any time and if you have paid for treatment which you have not taken, we will of course give you an immediate reimbursement of the balance you have paid.
